Master Your Emotions; Kick Anxiety to the Curb

I can’t quite put my finger on what’s bothering me. I have trouble making decisions—even small ones like what to make for dinner. I feel like I’m turning in circles sometimes, unable to move forward, but not wanting to be where I am. If I’m even able to fall asleep, I wake up frequently with worries: money, health, kids, work, my relationship. And those worries make me feel like there’s a big pressure on my chest; it’s even hard to breathe sometimes. Trouble sleeping, stomachaches, headaches…it’s all becoming too much. Sometimes I even feel afraid, but I don’t really know why. It’s just a general sense being out of control.

Although anxiety can sometimes be hard to identify, the long-term effect is extremely disruptive.

Living with anxiety, generalized anxiety (or a general anxiety disorder, GAD), panic disorder, or experiencing panic attacks causes immense stress. You become highly reactive and sensitive to anxiety triggers—usually without being aware of it. You might start avoiding situations that make you uncomfortable, limiting your contact with particular people, turning over decision-making to others, and developing obsessive or compulsive behaviors (smoking, excessive drinking, sex, eating disorders, extreme working out).

Some 12% of all Canadians experience an anxiety disorder—and the vast majority of the sufferers are women. What’s more, many women with anxiety aren’t “worry warts” or “nervous nellies.” They’re often go-getters, women in authority, and women who appear—from the outside—to have life all figured out.

But on the inside, the stress and anxiety are eroding their quality of life.

Understand the Cycle of Anxiety and How to Break It

Anxiety isn’t mental illness. Anxiety is a normal biological response. It’s healthy to occasionally feel panicky or fearful. To ensure our survival, humans have an alarm system that kicks in when we sense danger or threats. This “fight or flight” response activates when we experience fear, and serves to protect us and keep us safe.

What’s not normal or healthy about anxiety is when we feel it constantly, as an undercurrent running through our daily lives, without any specific threat or justifiable cause.

The danger with untreated anxiety is that it can become your normal state. Because anxiety is a survival instinct, it’s a powerful force in the brain and body. The connections throughout the limbic system (responsible for the function of the “fight or flight” instinct) can become calibrated to keep your body in a state of constant, generalized anxiety. Where it once used to require a major threat or fear to induce anxiety, now, increasingly more minor triggers can trip the alarm system.

To break free from anxiety, both the physical and emotional elements have to be addressed. That’s why hypnotherapy is such a powerful treatment.

Hypnosis Breaks the Cycle of Anxiety

Hypnotherapy is an effective, long-lasting, safe and non-habit-forming way to treat anxiety. Because it helps break the cycle, and to identify the root causes of your anxiety, hypnotherapy is a powerful tool for women who want to regain control and confidence.

While anti-anxiety drugs can alter your brain’s chemical balance to suppress the symptoms of anxiety, they do nothing to uncover, identify and correct whatever underlying issues, fears or emotional triggers are at the root of your anxiety.

So why not rely on counseling and/or psychotherapy as a treatment? Because it’s painful and fear-provoking to face the thoughts, belief systems or memories that cause us anxiety, our brains may try to prevent us from exploring them. So even though you may consciously want to address the root source of your anxiety in talk therapy, while there, you’re subconsciously avoiding the most dangerous territory.

Hypnotherapy for anxiety works because it speaks to the subconscious part of your mind that’s storing the root source of your stress reaction. By taking you into a deeply relaxed state that allows your conscious mind and your subconscious mind to “talk” with one another, your hypnotherapist can more efficiently and effectively explore the anxiety-provoking thoughts, belief systems or memories.

By speaking to the subconscious in hypnosis, your hypnotherapist can use motivational suggestion to distract your mind from anxiety triggers and to refocus its attention on more productive goals. Your hypnotherapist can also help your subconscious mind to see some of your anxiety triggers from a different perspective, and help you to change negative core belief systems that might be supporting the generalized anxiety you’ve lived with for so long.
